Seperti halnya surat-surat konvensional, maka pesan-pesan e- mail juga sangat mengandalkan pada kata-kata. Artinya, berbeda dengan komunikasi bertatap muka, atau bahkan telepon, di sini kita tidak mengenal "bahasa tubuh". Kita tidak tahu, apakah ucapan "sayang sekali ya?", misalnya, untuk menggambarkan si penulis sedang melucu, atau sedang marah.
Karena itu, berhati- hatilah menggunakan kata-kata. "Selalu pikir ulang, sebelum Anda menekan tombol send," begitu kata banyak orang yang berpengalaman. Terlebih bila Anda menggunakan sarkasme dan humor.
Bisa terjadi, kata-kata yang Anda maksudkan sekedar melucu, akan diterima sebagai ejekan oleh si penerima. Dalam banyak kasus, kesalahpahaman seperti ini memang sering terjadi pada komunitas pengguna e-mail.
Bagaimana caranya untuk menghindarkan hal-hal seperti itu?
Selama ini, para pengguna e-mail sudah memiliki konvensi yang lazim disebut emotikon (smiley faces). Sebagai contoh, tanda :-) berarti "muka gembira" untuk humor.
